How to Change Your Name After Your Wedding

Life Events

Getting married soon? Check out our tips for changing your name!

One of the most exciting parts of getting married is deciding if you’re going to change your last name. It’s a big commitment and can be a large undertaking—but it’s often worth it. So, where do you start with how to change your name after your wedding? Use our checklist to begin your name change.

To begin to answer the question “how to legally change your name” you need your marriage license and certified copies. Ask if you can purchase your certified copies when you’re applying for your marriage license – that way they will automatically mail you your marriage certificate and certified copies when they’re ready. It’s recommended to start with three copies, and you can always purchase more later. Keep your marriage certificate safe, but use the certified copies for the name change process.

  1. Gather Required Documents
    ○    Proof of identity: Driver’s license, passport, state ID, or U.S. Military ID
    ○    Proof of citizenship: Valid passport or birth certificate
    ○    Proof of name change: Certified copy of your marriage license
  2. Complete Form SS-5
    ○    Download and complete the Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5), which is available on the SSA website or at your local SSA office.
  3. Submit Your Application
    ○    By mail to your local Social Security office, or
    ○    In person at a nearby Social Security office
  4. Wait for Your Card
After submission, your request will be processed and you will be mailed a new Social Security card. Your number will remain the same, but your new name will appear on the card.

Wait 24 hours after updating your Social Security information before visiting the DMV to get a new driver’s license. In most states, a name change is part of the renewal process, so you’ll likely need a new photo and to pay a renewal fee. Bring:

  • Receipt from the Social Security office (or your new card)
  • Current driver’s license
  • Proof of address (if required by your state)
  • Certified copy of your marriage license
  • Cash or check for fees (credit cards often incur extra processing fees)
  • Check your state’s DMV website for additional requirements.

If your passport was issued less than a year ago, you won’t need to pay a fee. If older, the cost is $110. Submit the following by mail for a passport name change:

  • Completed DS-82 form
  • Certified copy of your marriage license
  • Current passport
  • Check for the passport fee
  • Recent passport photo (2x2 inches)

You will receive a new passport number, so consider this when booking international travel.

Once you receive your new ID with your new name, it’s time to update your banking information. Most banks require these changes in-person for security purposes. If you don’t live near a branch, check with your bank about mailing in a certified copy of your marriage license. Bring:

  • Certified copy of your marriage license
  • New Social Security card
  • New driver’s license

Make sure to check with your bank beforehand in case they require any other documents. It’s important to note – if you’re a joint owner on an account, or have accounts with someone else, they will likely need to go with you to the bank for account retitling purposes.

Each credit card company handles name changes differently. Some allow online updates, while others require a certified copy of your marriage license. Contact each company to find out how to change your name.

Once your ID and banking details are updated, provide your employer with your new information to ensure payroll and benefits are processed correctly. In addition, you may need to have your work email updated to reflect the name change.

Whether you’re combining policies or simply updating your name, it’s essential to do this promptly in case of claims. You’ll need a certified copy of your marriage license. If combining policies, handle all changes at once for easier management. Marriage is a “major life event,” so you can update health care coverage outside of open enrollment.

You won’t need to contact your doctor’s office or dentist about the change to your insurance. Instead, you can make these changes before your next appointment by providing your new insurance card and ID.

You can update your mortgage or rent information, utilities, and other services (e.g., internet, water) online or over the phone with your new name and banking details.

Don’t forget to update automatic payments, subscriptions (e.g., streaming services, gym memberships), and any services tied to your banking or credit card information.

Additional Considerations for Name Changes

  • You may choose to hyphenate your last name. Check with your county clerk's office to see if your state allows hyphenated names after marriage. When applying for your marriage license, let the clerk know you want to hyphenate your last name.
  • Keeping your maiden name as your middle name is another option. This can help if you need identification for services like airline frequent flyer miles or car rentals.
  • Husbands also have the option to change their last names, though some states require additional legal steps like court orders or newspaper ads.
  • You’ll have to decide what name you want to use professionally. You may reintroduce yourself to your colleagues, clients, and vendors if you choose a name change. Also, if you decide not to change your name, it’s helpful to let others know.

Important Information for International Honeymooners

If you’re traveling abroad after your wedding, your passport name must match your airline tickets. If you plan to have your new passport by your departure date, book your tickets in your new name. Otherwise, book under your maiden name. If needed, some airlines can update your name on the booking, but this varies by airline.

For Global Entry updates, visit an Enrollment Center in person after getting your new passport. For TSA PreCheck, you can update your information by calling (855) 347-8371.
