How to Avoid the Trap of Online Bargains

Security

Don’t let fake deals ruin your shopping spree. Learn how to protect yourself.

With online shopping becoming more popular than ever, the convenience of browsing for deals at the click of a button is enticing, but so are the traps set by scammers. It's important to stay alert and informed. Here’s a common scenario that could happen to anyone, especially when an offer looks too good to pass up.

The Offer That’s Too Good to be True

  • You come across an ad for a trendy jacket, advertised at an incredible 80% off. The deal seems unbeatable, and with bold "Limited Time!" warnings, it pushes you to act quickly. This urgency is one of the biggest red flags to be cautious of. Scammers love to pressure you with time-limited offers to make impulsive purchases.

Tip: If an offer feels too good to be true, it often is.

  • After clicking on the ad, you land on a professional-looking website. There’s even a countdown timer urging you to complete your purchase quickly before the deal disappears. Scammers invest in creating legitimate looking websites that appear trustworthy.

Tip: A good looking website doesn’t guarantee a legitimate business.

  • You proceed with your order, feeling excited about the amazing deal. You receive a confirmation email stating that your item will ship soon. Everything seems to be going smoothly until it doesn't. When you try to revisit the website a day later, you’re greeted with an "Error 404: Website Not Found" message. The site has vanished, along with your money. Scammers often set up temporary sites, closing them down once they’ve collected enough personal or financial information

Tip: Be wary of websites that don’t have a clear, established presence, and always check if the site uses 'https' in the URL. The 's' stands for secure, indicating the site encrypts your data and is generally more trustworthy.

How to Protect Yourself

Before making any purchases, take the time to verify whether the deal and the website are legitimate.

  1. Look for reviews from other shoppers
  2. Check for secure payment methods
  3. Consider using reputable websites you’ve shopped from before.

Always research before you buy. If you’re unsure about a deal, it’s better to skip it and avoid losing money.
