5 Ways to Save When Attending a Wedding

Budget and Save

Got a calendar full of weddings and a wallet that’s sweating? We’re here to help!

Don't let money be a reason why you can't attend a wedding! Weddings can get pricey, but with a little planning, you can still be there to share in the joy without breaking the bank. Here are some clever tips to help you save on travel, gifts, attire, and more—so you can enjoy every moment of the celebration while keeping your budget intact.

  1. Prepare in Advance

If you're close to the bride and groom, try and figure out where they are planning the wedding festivities. If they plan to go far, you can budget and start to save ahead of time. When it comes to gifts, try to pick something from the registry before it gets picked over. This way, you can choose something within your budget rather than scrambling for an expensive option later. Consider both your budget and your relationship with the couple when deciding how much to spend. If money is tight, don’t underestimate the power of a personal or handmade gift—it can be just as meaningful, if not more so, than something bought off the registry.

  1. Travel Smart

Book flights and hotels as soon as you receive the save-the-date to secure the best prices. Some websites offer discounts when booking flights and hotels together. Compare bundled deals and individual bookings and see what’s better for your budget. If you can, be flexible with travel days, as traveling on week days is often cheaper.

  1. Split Costs with Groups

Hotel and airfare are the two largest factors when attending a wedding that’s out of town. If you are able to, try and talk to the airlines to see if you could get a group rate, if there are a large amount of people flying from the same place. Consider carpooling if the venue is within driving distance. Also, consider splitting hotel rooms with other guests you know. It'll give you a good chance to catch up with some friends and save some extra money.

  1.  Rent and Reuse

You most likely have acceptable clothing already in your closet, so shop there first. If you do feel like you need a new dress or suit, consider renting or borrowing from a friend instead of buying. It'll be cheaper and will allow you the option to get a different outfit for the next wedding you attend. If you decide to buy an outfit, opt for a neutral dress or suit that can be easily dressed up with different accessories. This way, you can wear it to multiple weddings throughout the year, making it a versatile addition to your wardrobe.

  1. Take Advantage of the Venue Amenities

If the wedding is at a hotel or resort, find out if there are any free or discounted amenities you can use during your stay. Some venues offer free parking, shuttle services, or even discounts on activities, which can save you money. If you're planning to stay overnight, look for venues that offer discounted room rates for wedding guests—this could be a significant savings compared to booking separately.

With these tips, you should be financially prepared to enjoy wedding season. However, if attending just isn’t affordable for you, kindly explain to the couple and offer your support in other ways. There is no shame in doing what’s best for you financially!
